A SUBTERRANEAN REFECTORY FOR ALL BILDUNGSCAMPUS STUDENTS

The old refectory (Mensa) in the forum on Bildungscampus Ost had already reached its capacity limits for quite some time. To cope with the increasing demand, a new, subterranean refectory was completed by the spring of 2020, which provides a restaurant area of 697 square metres and has room for up to 700 people. Despite its subterranean location, the refectory is flooded with light thanks to a centrally positioned courtyard with 56 seats. The refectory is connected to the adjacent assembly hall (Aula) building by a tunnel, which facilitates catering for events. The multi-curved roof shell of the lounge area shapes the large open room, representing a deliberate contrast to the otherwise clear and organised structure of the other campus buildings.

The new refectory at the Bildungscampus in Heilbronn is part of the 21 award-winning (some of them multiple times) refectories and cafés of Studierendenwerk Heidelberg, which, in the spirit of sustainability, consciously focuses on regional, seasonal, fair and organically grown products. As a public-law institution, Studierendenwerk Heidelberg with its 560 employees is responsible for the social care and development of around 49,000 students and provides about 5,500 places to sleep. For its students, it is represented at the university locations Heidelberg, Schwetzingen, Heilbronn, Sontheim, Künzelsau, Schwäbisch Hall, Mosbach and Bad Mergentheim.
